There are just so many ways you can wire a triode, let alone an 8877.
You have packaging/styling, control circuitry, and protective circuitry.
Yes, you can also control it with a microprocessor and automate
everything, but that takes it out of reach for most hams. Course most
manual tune, top end amps are out of reach for the average ham anyway.
