Greetings. Please forgive me if you end up with this message twice.
I got the address wrong on the first attempt - I think. This is my first
INTERNET broadcast message, so please be gentle if I am not following the rules
perfectly whatever they may be... And so to my little problem.......
I've just put up a KT34XA and the antenna gets out well. Subjectively I feel it
is ahead of the TH7 that it replaced. However I am not happy with the VSWR on
10m. The lowest VSWR is on 28200 at 1.7 : 1. It is 1.8 : 1 at 28000 and rises
as
you go up the band. I'm not an SWR-freak, seeking 1:1 on all occasions, but the
handbook suggests the VSWR should be less than 1.5 through the bottom of the
band. Furthermore other users report a better VSWR (although we do not know how
it was measured).
My set up. TS930 / Omni 6 - Hansen FS500H VSWR meter. All meters correlate.
Antenna at 50 ft (will go to 80 when I sort this prob out) fed with 150 ft
of LDF4-50 hardline. VSWR does not vary with direction of antenna. No other
antennas are stacked with it or close by. VSWR curves on 20/15 are pretty good
although I may tweak the antenna to shift 21 lower as it is 3:1 on 21350.
I've done all the usual idiot checks. Continuity, recheck measurements, cable
and connectors. TH7 on same feeder was 1.01 to 1 !! I've tried moving the
straps on the T match (above results relate to factory settings) with not much
effect. The VSWR dips where I want it to but the value is not low enough.
Does anyone recognise the symptoms, and can anyone suggest a cure please ?

I have found the thread about lack of a good resource for many of the
skills necessary for competitive station design to be of great
interest since I had started on a book a year and a half ago to address
these same questions. Work and a divorce have caused some delays but
I am trying to wrap up the project this summer. I will probably
self-publish just to cut down on the lead time and the working title
is "Secrets of the Antenna Gurus". For the first effort I am
addressing issues from the amplifier output connector on, including
antenna supports, grounding, antennas, and feedlines with an
emphasis on all of the mechanical details that are not to be found
anywhere else (concrete, turnbuckles, guy material--etc). This
book is based on my experiences over the last 30+ years both
in amateur radio and in professional antenna work, but I want to keep
the thing concise and simple (so that it really is used).
I mention all of this as an invitation for anyone to make suggestions
about what I should include. It is not too late to have an input on
topics to be covered. I feel like I have covered all of the basics but I
may be too close to the project! I don't want to overlap the ARRL Antenna
Book, Antennas and Techniques for Low Band DXing, or Physical Design of Yagi
Antennas, but rather to fill in the holes that these books (or any others,
as far as I can tell) have left open. I have done antenna and tower work
from the Carribean to the Arctic and have
seen lots of mistakes (both amateur and professional) due to a lack
of good reference material that is organized in a useful fashion.
Send me suggestions on what should be covered--this may add new topics
to my list or just help me to better choose which ones to include and
which ones to drop.

In the 1960s as I was preparing to put up my first tower, 80'
of Rohn 25,I found a reference that covered many aspects of
tower design. The book was from McGraw Hill and titled "NAB
Engineering Handbook. (National Association of Broadcasters.)
The editor was Prose Walker (W4BW). It has an excellant chapter
titled "Design, Erection and Maintenance of Antenna Structures".
With this reference I was able to calculate wind loading, guy
stress, tower leg loading and base and guy anchor loading. It
is also full of practical information such as how to install
wire rope clips, etc. Don't know if it's still in print.
The other excellant reference is the Rohn tower catalog.

is the eight edition, published in 1992. The fifth edition was published
in 1960, the sixth in 1975 and the seventh in 1985.
The eighth edition is about 1340 pages and the cost is $235 ($195 to NAB

Hello,
I just received a message from someone on the list and will
not repeat any of it here, but I would like to describe what
was said. Basically, I was told that if I repeat any response
to a post on this list, that a good lawyer would have me for
lunch and that I would be held liable for libel. Wow!
I thought this was amateur radio. I have never heard such
talk on the ham bands. Is this generally how people on the
list care to approach ham radio? I must admit that I have
no extensive background in the legal issues of cyberspace,
but I understand that the Electronic Fronteir Foundation is
an advocacy group specializing in such matters. Perhaps we
should contact them for further guidance before making vague
threats on and off the list about legal action.
Just to set the record straight, I did not repeat the message
in question, the list manager did.
If the gentleman who responded would like to sue me, he is welcome.
I guess he is entitled to some portion of my Social Security Disability
after I spent 6yrs serving my country, attended university, and then
received a graduate degree in engineering. I guess it won't be that
much more to lose! As Pat Benatar used to say, Hit me with your best
shot.

Nothing libelous about your message. Rude, obnoxious, ill-conceived
maybe, but not libelous. Any sysop (or for that metter any recipient of

Q total was down from last year in part because we didn't get the 10m
opening this time around. After last year's good total we had more ambitious
antenna plans for
this year but we still just managed to get the same antennas in the air.
There aren't tons of contest crazies here in Huntspatch so I think that we
learned to invite more of the non crazies than we think we need so that we
end up with enough people. It was fun anyway. Our antennas will (hopefully)
be up permanently next year so it will be interesting to see if we want to
do double the work in order to do FD. I think I'm in favor of a W0AIH style
operation from home. Sure would be nice to have that antenna farm in common
