Finally, the results you have been waiting for. The tenth (wow) Internet
Sprint (SprINT) contest was held the 28th of April at 0100 UTC. Twenty
meters was screwy (as always) and 40 was good enough to produce almost as
many QSOs as 20 did.
In the early minutes, N5RZ/m seemed to be in the best spot having a great
signal into almost all areas on the country. However, Gator fell off the
pace when 40 meters came into play, and John, KZ2S at the controls of N2NT,
came out in the top spot. John was pushed by K6LL who ended up with 4 fewer
QSOs for second place.
N6TR experimented with two-radio operating on one band (20 meters), which
was effective but hardly competitive as 20 meters was very poor in the
northwest. A recovery on 40 meters allowed Tree to fight off a host of
other finishers within 4 QSOs.
The results you are about to see were generated by K2MM. The reasons the
results are late are discussed in the end of the writeup. I doubt this
combination of events will happen again. The good news is that all of the
tools are now under his control and should be available for a long time to
come.
For those of you who might have joined the CQ-CONTEST reflector recently,
you may have missed the announcement of this contest, and thus not know what
it is about. It is very similar to the NCJ NA Sprint contest, except for
two major differences: Instead of always sending your own name, you only
send it for the first QSO. After that, you send the name received in your
previous QSO. This is like a group of people sitting in a circle, passing a
message around, and seeing how it got garbled after making its way around.
The other difference is that you can rework stations after making 3 QSOs
with other stations. This gives you many chances to check out how the
competition is doing (as K6LL found out) and assures high rates.
The logs are cross-checked by computer, and any busted QSO results in
removal from BOTH logs. Congrats to AH3C who had a perfect log with 15
QSOs. KZ8E and N6TR had less than 2 percent QSOs removed. Good work all
three of you.
The next SprINT will probably be held during the last weekend of July. Keep
an eye on CQ-CONTEST for more information.

#OK + #NG is the raw claimed score. #NG is the number of busted contacts.
Some contacts may be busted for more than one reason, so RXNG + TXNG + DUPE
may be greater than #NG. As usual, amnesty was granted for QSO-number
errors where the difference was one or less. Also, because a bug in TR-Log
caused several logs to be missing QTH data, blanket amnesty was granted for
all QTH errors for this running only. Stations making more than 10 QSOs who
did not submit a log were penalized one point per unreported QSO!

THE JOYS OF HORSERACING
Some ops have remarked that being allowed to work dupes makes this contest
uninteresting. I've found exactly the opposite. Frequently working a
station with whom you're running neck-and-neck and comparing numbers can be
a lot of fun.

With only a four-QSO difference between you and first-place John/KZ2S/N2NT,
I was sure your horserace graph would be very interesting. Unfortunately,
it turned out to be quite boring. As your table above shows, John was
consistently just a little ahead of you. Sorry, Dave.

The horserace between Ward and Tor was one of the more interesting. With
Ward losing only 3 NG QSOs to Tor's 10, Ward actually passed him. One
interesting facet is how rates varied with band. Notice how Tor's rate
dropped the first time he went to 40, prompting him to come back to 20 for
another 15 minutes. Also notice how the rates took off once 40 got humming.

The x-axis is a constant rate of 130 QSOs per two hours. Each line
above/below the x-axis is one valid QSO more/less than that rate.

There are a lot of people doing this. If you use TR-Log, it is the default,
so many people might have been doing it without even knowing it.

WHERE'S K2MM BEEN AND WHAT'S UP WITH JZAP.COM?
First, my sincere apologies to all who participated for the lateness of this
report. I hope I've been able to make this write-up worth waiting for.
My former employer, MasPar Computer, went supernova in early February. It
ran out of money, collapsed, and blew off about 70% of its mass. What got
left behind is a software-only core now called NeoVista. No need for any of
us chip designers. So I've been out of work -- a bum -- since then.
Two weeks later, while riding my bicycle with enthusiasm knowable only by
the unemployed, I had a minor disagreement with a car that ran a stop sign.
My collarbone is just now approaching fully healed.
MasPar did, however, let me keep my e-mail accounts active. Best of all, I
was able to buy my used SPARCststion-2 from them for cheap. So I arranged
with a local ISP to have an ISDN line run to my house.
A few weeks earlier, MasPar had moved (nearby), changed its name to
NeoVista, changed its ISP, and been totally down for two weeks. I had
learned to live a disconnected life. But the PacBell installer showed up
two weeks later, hooked me up, and I haven't gotten much sleep since!
Once the installation was done, it was very easy to get almost everything
else (net)working. FTP, telnet, rlogin, talk, Netscape, ping, finger, etc.
Everything except e-mail. My sendmail config file was from MasPar where
there's a mail hub on the LAN. Being naked on the net is very different.
So I bought the Sendmail handbook and dove into its 800 pages. It took a
long time and a lot of reading, but I finally figured out the few small
tweaks needed to fix my e-mail.
With e-mail working, I felt ready to sign Scott/KA9FOX's web-page guestbook.
That set off an e-mail exchange between us. Scott was skeptical that a web
server at the end of an ISDN line would anything but lame. I just had to
show him it would be OK, so I pulled an all-nighter writing a bare-bones
web-server daemon just for a bandwidth test.

Welcome to the world of OMNI's and computers. I a short sentence, the OMNI
compuer interface is brain damaged. Ten-Tec will not admit it, and will
tell you that all is fine. From my experience any thing over 1200 baud
makes the OMNI lockup and do wierd things. Also, changing things like
baud rate on the OMNI requires a power cycle for it to take effect. My OMNI
likes to demonstrate it disatisfaction by causing the main tuning knob to
lock at 0.85 kHz per turn ... really puts the S in S&P. But the thing that
really makes it interesting is CT will truck along at 9600 baud without a
wimper. K1EA got something figured out. By the way, the Icom you chose
depends on the addr you set the OMNI to. IC735 is right for the default
addr of 4.

If your getting only a certificate (other than first place) and results,
it's mailed
If your gettting only a t-shirt, maybe a certificate, and results, it
is being mailed in chunks this weekend and should be pretty well
gone by Sunday evening. (Canadian's and a couple that ordered multiple
shirts will need to be taken into the PO Monday or Tuesday).
The first place certificates are being mailed flat and I need to get
the postage for them, they should go out in a day or two.
If your getting a plaque or wine, it is boxed, but I need to fill out
the UPS forms and take the stuff down to the brown truck store. It should
be going out the end of the week. Plaque and/or wine winners that also
ordered a t-shirt, your t-shirt is in the box.
If your getting only results, you come after the above, and they should be
going out no later than next weekend.
I again appologize for the delays the theft of my personal computer caused
the mailing. I certainly hope the delays will not cause any ill feelings
toward CQP or NCCC.

Hello all
Need some input on what effect galvinized steel trush boom
support would have on a kt34xa with a forty meter 402cd by
chris craft on the same mast ten feet above the klm kt34xa.
I'm seeing an swr of 2 to 1 on 20 meters 10 and 15 meters are
fine. I'm not sure of the cause is it the steel truss
supports or the forty meter beam. I have had the klm on top
with the same probelm. Any throughts on which mite cause this
problem and a cure other than a second tower or removing one
of the antennas.

Your comment about Dick's 579 reports reflects your youthful perspective
on the hobby (even tho u are a Granddad!).
Prior the the popularity of memory keyers, honest reports were normally
given during contests, DX QSOs and even DXpeditions! During the heat of
battle, 579 sometimes became the default report, certainly not 5NN.
In 1960, Bob (now VP2VI) went on a Contest DXpedition to VP1JH, and he
used a mechanical code machine. My recollection was that the machine sent
579 (not 5NN) reports to everyone!
Some of the seasoned veterans on the reflector may even recall the name of
the CONTEST magazine published by Wayne Green in the early 1960s...
(I'm sure K1VR remembers!)

If you can get the MCI Mail folks to set you up with MCI Mail Friends and
Family Service - which is what I use for reflector mail, that would give you an
id which is literally FREE for incoming mail. You could use that to receive
logs. I find it a useful way to separate the ham reflector activity from the
other Internet activity which I use Netcom for.
Just a suggestion...
I'm disappointed that CQ doesn't pay out of pocket expenses for it's
volunteers. That seems rather unfair to say the least.
