With respect to Father Neiger's retirement plans for his
bubble gum investment:

My wife teaches special ed children.   Many have attention-deficit
issues.  When it comes time for standard testing, she makes a point
of giving them (sugarless) gum to chew on.   Tends to keep them in
their seats and concentrating, by providing a path for excess energy.
Test scores go up.  Peggy got a kick out of Jim's description, but says
it's absolutely true.  

Without engaging in speculation about our collective early-childhood
development, let me merely observe that some of us have shown difficulty 
walking and chewing gum.  So it naturally follows that chewing tends to 
keep you in the chair!
