Subject: [CQ-Contest] The "QSL REPLY" thing
Dear Contesters,
joking with QRP, LOW POWER and QRO subjects... a different but serious
matter came out... the "QSL REPLY" thing...
I am the one who wrote:

One thing I also do not agree with you is the QSL thing.
The QSL reply is a COURTESY matter;
if they do not send the stamp reply via bureau but REPLY!
---
I have read several comments on the topic that unfortunately did not help me
to change idea.
These are the problems that in my opinion came out from the messages:
1) DEEP EGOISM
I think that all "forgiving" comments for not replying to QSLs in some
way... forget the basic of amateur radio: it's a 2 WAY COMMUNICATION.
It doesn't matter if you are QRP, LOW POWER or QRO, it doesn't matter if you
are rich or poor, young or old, Russian or American, Chinese or Indian, male
or female, amateur radio is just about a 2 WAY COMMUNICATION.
This means particularly that the pleasure and the duties should be mutual,
whoever you are. Amateur radio is a rare matter of equality.
The fact is that the QSL REPLY is really the "very minimum" coded and
standard act that confirms that amateur radio is a 2 WAY COMMUNICATION in
the reality.
If you do not reply it means that you think amateur radio is just YOUR
pleasure, YOUR time, YOUR antennas, YOUR KWs on the air and that the other
part of your 2 WAY COMMUNICATION is just a simple witness of your
greatness...
No better words: deep egoism. It's a serious illness.
2) ABSENCE OF RESPECT
If one operator in the 2 WAY COMMUNICATION link writes and sends a QSL to
the other operator it's because he has verified, investing time and money,
that the particular Country/State/County or geographical entity of his
correspondent is missing in his targets and so he'd like to have it
confirmed in the reality.
For example I am collecting US counties myself and I QSL ONLY to NOT
CONFIRMED US counties, so I do not send QSL to all linked hams in the USA to
see what comes back; this means sitting in front of QRZ.COM, County Hunters
sites, etc.
So, a request for a QSL means an effort that, even if minimum, should be
respected.
Can this be taken into account in the equality world?
3) BAD MONEY BUDGETING
I am impressed to read so many comments about the stamps COST in the U.S. as
the QSL service doesn't work domestically.
I am impressed as those writing this concern down are mainly big guns,
probably excellent professionals in life, who certainly invest several
thousands of dollars each year in transceivers, amplifiers, towers,
antennas, land acquisitions, etc.
I think you simply forgot to consider the 2 WAY COMMUNICATION concept in
your budgeting.
I keep track also of my ham radio expenses with MS MONEY; I know that with
my turnover of yearly QSOs I have to spend approximately Euro 400 per year
in the printing of QSLs, green stamps and/or return stamps, postal stamps,
software, labels, envelopes, etc. My subcategory for that is simply named
"QSL Traffic".
If I can't afford this I'd better wait a few months for my 5th antenna or
wait an year or 2 to upgrade from my FT 1000 MKV to the newest FT 2000.
That simple...
4) LAZINESS AT THE PUREST STATE
Also I cannot accept the TIME issue that has been used in some comments.
If you use this reflector, it means that you have a PC. It's nowadays so
simple to manage databases, even very large databases of QSOs. I use EASYLOG
5, a wonderful Italian software now available also in the US, and have my
contest software by N3FJP exporting QSOs in the main program. Easy and
immediate.
Searching a callsign is a matter of milliseconds. Selecting the callsign of
the received QSL and put the right QSO in the QSL buffer for printing is
probably 1 more second.
Printing labels for all buffered QSOs takes a little bit longer, probably 5
to 10 minutes, but you can do this ONCE a MONTH or even ONCE each 2 MONTHS.
It's just a matter of BASIC organization, very simple things that really
EVERYBODY in every corner of the world can do with a PC and a printer.
If you refuse this idea, it means that your laziness has reached its purest
state.
Do "NO REPLY" guys feel shaked by all this?
PSE QSL...

Doug...and all
it is difficult to believe any U.S. operator gets enough
domestic PSE QSL cards without return postage to be a financial
problem. But I think Tom is complaining about the principle, not the
expense.)
I'm catching up on my QSL chores before the postal rates increase this
weekend. There are 60 "PSE QSL" cards sitting here without return postage,
mostly from guys working WAS or county hunters. It's the principle...and the
interest! I'm all for "giving something back"...but no SASE is just damn
rude.
Ok, the printer has cooled down...back to work.
