John,
IC746 receiver doesn't handle contest band conditions and IM very well. I
have owned one for about 4 years and originally bought it for use as radio
#2 during contests and it's 6/2meter capabilities for chasing DX.
I recently bought an FT1000 because of the receiver performance of that
radio. I also own a TS850 which needs service. If the TS850 can be returned
to service it will become radio #2 here. If not I will go looking for
another 850 or maybe a used Field.
Bottom line, my 746 is now the 6/2 meter rig and will only be used as
contest radio #2 in a pinch. I really like it's front panel layout, but the
receiver leaves a lot to be desired.
