Just like using a second radio, using packet is a skill. If used
properly, it CAN be an advantage. If used improperly (just like a
second radio can kill your run rate) it most certainly can be a detriment.
When do I use packet?
Other than looking at the spots to see if 10m is open, I pretty much
ignore packet the first 24 hours of the contest. I do find it useful
for quickly S&P'ing new stations on R1 when the run slows down, before
changing bands. Also, for picking off new stations with R2 on another
band (verifying the callsigns, of course!) Other than that, I've
learned it's counterproductive to chase new mults as they're spotted
because the same guys beat me every time and I don't enjoy banging my
head against a wall :.)
I believe K3WW coined the term single-op distracted. If I had to pick
one guy from whom I've learned the most about improving my contesting
skills, he's the one.
