The "band plan" is a SUGGESTION. C'mon guys. The NAQP power limit is 100
watts. Very few of us have much more than wire antennas on 160. The contest
runs 12 hours. I seriously doubt most of us operated more than an hour or
two on 160. As far as I'm concerned the "channelized net police" should
learn how to cope with a little QRM from 2 khz away. Who knows, they might
even figure out how to use those filters and PBT and try the DSP between
their ears????
FWIW, I spent my last hour running at 1873. The band sounded like 20 meters
during a major DXpedition pileup. I just narrowed the filters, tweaked the
passband and did the best I could.
With 100 watts feeding an inverted L with a 65 foot horizontal element at 70
feet how much QRM can I create?
That being said, I always look for a "clear" frequency, ask if anyone is
using it and never intentionally tune up where someone else is operating.
But, c'mon, if the frequency is open...use it.

I missed the event but my slantical is cut for 1830 and the SWR curve is
pretty small. I am sure many others are in the same boat. I thought there
were a bunch of nets above 1900.
Was there something wrong with the bottom 30khz of the band? You can sure
cram a lot of CW signals in 30Khz.
We got into this debate on 40m after the CQ SSB contest. It didn't go very
far.
A few hours of intense activity should easily be tolerated.
Just one guys opinion.

Some of you will know I am a contester, although almost exclusively on CW. I
am also a 160m DXer.
I was very disappointed last evening to hear many NAQP stations operating on
SSB at well below 1840kHz, and a couple below 1830kHz. There is no need for
this in a purely domestic NA contest where we all have access to the full
200kHz of the band. During several sweeps I only detected two stations
operating above 1900kHz, and the centre of activity was clearly
1835-1870kHz.
Why?
I understand and accept that during major international contests the whole
of the band will be used for SSB, but do feel that this contest could, and
should, be operated in accordance with the accepted band plan.
