Bottom line is; check all calls and don't rely on the accuracy of the spots.
This time around, if I came along a station that wasn't ID'ing I'd listen
thru two contacts, then ask for a call. If no response I'd move along and
come back later.
I have to ask though because someone supposed it here; Is the competition so
great that clubs would intentionally spot busted calls to cause others to
waste time? I find that hard to believe. If it's true, then I'm glad I'm a
member of the club that those are trying to confuse. (It must *%&* to be
second/third/fourth I guess.....)

Irritating as it is, I think flagging the callsign of the offender won't
help: it's tough to tell who's doing it - I operate at a Multi-2, and there
are a lot of us that post with the same call. And there are newbies just
learning and expert old farts like us - oops, I'm not an expert: I just play
one on the radio.
I think the benefits and the risks of using spots kind of balance out. I've
gotten pretty good at spotting a bad spot (partdon the pun) - if there's a
spot I haven't worked, and it's close one I have (alphabet-wize) on the band
map, I'm particularly cautious and I won't spend a lot of time there. And
as soon as I can, I erase it. But you knew that.
Caveat emptor: Use your brain to debug the spots. But let's keep as many
people playing our game as we can - let's not discourage non-typists/CW
newbies. Let's get really good at seeing through the baloney that gets
thrown on the bandmap.
Perhaps some S/W that will flag bad spots. Can't be TOO hard...

Ok, Dave. This is great stuff. But, now that you have almost completely
eradicated malicious spotting from our world, you need a new challenge.
Almost as detrimental as self-spotting, busted spotting is the next big
problem to deal with. Guys who can't copy and can't type should not be
passing their errors on to the rest of the world. So, how about some
post-contest comparisons of spotted calls against the SCP database? For
those who have posted 50 or more spots during the contest, what percent
appear to be busted calls? Listed from highest percent to lowest, that would
be a good way to expose the worst and the best!
Going a step further, when we see SO2R repeatedly spotted as S02R on or near
14.027, can we figure out who first posted the bad call, and then identify
those who in all likelihood blindly picked up the spot and propagated it
further?
