Jim,

Your pet peeve in #1 was a problem for me. I have a wire antenna so there's
a lot of noise from every direction. If I couldn't tell he was coming back
to me because of noise or splatter, I'd wait to see if he came back again
with my report. Most ops tried a couple times but some just said QRZ as if I
QSLed and moved on. I know near the end of my time on the air (early Sun
afternoon), I had a station in the clear and his response was that we worked
before - so I guess he gets a NIL and didn't want to deal with it. Would
have take less time to make an exchange for both of us.

Most stations were id'ing often. When they were able to say "thanks" or
"QRZ" and get the next station, I guess they didn't need to waste their
breathe. Sometimes I just marked in my band map (was running unassisted so I
wasn't using it for packet) there was a station there and moved on, and
sometimes I just called him and if he answered I asked what his call was.

But the ops were terrific - I didn't run into anyone that wasn't willing to
pull me out of the noise (100w and wire antenna) and some even said hello.
SSB is much more work then RTTY. It wears you out!
