How about a Rookie Class?
Where you can only operate two SS's (sounds like a snake) as Rookie, and if someone else works the rookie they are worth double points. Helps the rookies only compete against other rookies, plus make the rookies worth looking for?

Bill nails it here! Different goals, make it work for different folks. The
"winning" is in the goal set.. not just getting your call published in the #1
slot. And just because you set that goal every time.. and don't get there, doesn'tmean
that every contest should change the rules so you think you have a better chance. I made
the top 25 in ARRL 10 one year, with a low quad, and a tiny squirt gun station. While I
was running the JAs, I heard the comments from the folks that couldn't. Not every field
has to be level to have fun playing in that field. However not every player has to get
dirty to play either. Some prefer to play on the edges, and some prefer tohave different
goals. And all can and should play nice, each having fun.
Have a great day,

It can be a challenge, just like winning the ARRLDX or CQWW is from
anywhere other than 1, 2 or 3 land is. However, guys in W6 land make do and
have
different goals other than 1st place.
It can be a challenge for stations other than in the south to win ARRL 10
meters. However, guys in W7 enter and set different goals than 1st place.
The 370 or so guys I worked in SS phone from W1, W2 and W3 show that
despite the disadvantage, they had no problem firing up the rig and having fun.
I won SS this year as a U station and have gotten close several times as a
B station. I intend to keep participating with nr 1 as a goal in the
contest. It makes the win more special when a contest is skewed.
Admittedly it takes a great station and an experienced op to do it. But
then again, it takes a great station and experienced op to win almost any of
the major contests anymore.

I won this year in SOAB U phone.

K1TO won B in 1998; KM9P in 1992; and W2GD in 1978.

CW: W2TZ, WA3DSZ, W2GD (ALL A OR B) 70-89
SSB W4AAA, K1BX, N4PN, K4VUD,N4PN, K4XS (ALL A OR B CLASS) 90-09
Those are are all -A- class. No operator in the Southeast, East, or
Northeast has won the "B" category since 1963. That should tell you
something.

SSB: K1EUF, N4MM, K4XS (ALL A OR B CLASS) 70-89
Again, all in the -A- class.

So, in the top level category - Single op High power - since 1970, there
have been 84 opportunities for stations on the east coast to win
Sweepstakes. It has happened a total of three times. And two of those
times involved stations in the deep south east. In other words, W2GD is
the only station in my neck of the woods who has won Sweepstakes. I
think that's a pretty telling sign that winning Sweeps on the East coast
is a major challenge. Kind of like winning CQWW from California.
