One possible reason the other station is "not in my log" is that I busted
their callsign during a prior QSO. In this case, the log checking will
penalize me for a busted call and give the other station credit for the QSO.

However, the best solution is still for the other station to simply work me
without breaking stride in their run. It saves them time and helps one of
us avoid a penalty without taking time out during the contest to debate the
issue. It is self-correcting if we just work all callers, dupes or not.

Contesting is a cooperative sport where competitors must work together to
create a valid QSO in both logs that each gets credit for. To that extent
"I am my brother's keeper". Working dupes supports this paradigm.

And if they are being real jerks I just say "not in my log" and move on
without working them. Or if they REALLY offend me I say "OK" and move
knowing they get the penalty. I am not my brother's keeper in a contest.
