I think that Jim may be onto something here.

Are you using a mono 1/4" plug going into the radio key jack ?

If so, replace it with a stereo plug where you use the tip and the
shield only.  Nevermind an adapter, just cut the old one off and
solder on a stereo plug.

We've got to resolve this now - you've been working on this for
months.
