How about a version of the SR-4000 that ran on the WET11 (a Ubicom?
processor), and perhaps others (more Ubicom processor-based devices?) for
right around $30? That would, for instance, put the cost of my CPE
installation right around $300. This would be helpful in selling the
service (and KN licenses).
If the WET11 could be bought in quantity for less than $100, so much the
better.
I bought into KN with the idea that I would have the flexibility to surf the
hardware economies of scale created by 802.11b deployment. Unfortunately,
it has been as good a wave as I originally thought it would be, in part
because the only off the shelf CPE choice (for anyone that wanted a
stand-alone network interface radio/SBC) has turned out to be the RG-1100,
and only the RG-1100. A pretty nice piece of hardware from a reliability
standpoint, it just hasn't declined in price much, I suspect, because those
selling it know that it's part of a required piece for outdoor wireless
networks. Its not, unfortunately, like we can select a Dlink, or Linksys AP
and substitute it in. (And maybe we don't want to...again, the reliability
of the RG can not be underrated.)
Doug, is it possible for KN to aggregate the purchases of the RG to get a
price on just the bare board? I've heard some talk about really high
numbers in order to get some consideration for an order right from the
factory.
