Sometimes when you lose the other end of a ptp and have to go there to
manually power cycle it, it has felt a lot like Carnet ;)

I really haven't seen problems with power over Ethernet yet with carnet
devices. We had to replace about 30 YDI etherant's last year due to
lightning. All problem customers have since then purchased Ethernet surge
enabled power strips or UPS devices with Ethernet surge suppression. Only
one has had recurring problems since then.
I feel that integrated board and antenna combo's are just a headache.
Especially since Carnet doesn't integrate the firmware for the wireless
cards I use into their kernel. An enclosed antenna makes it impossible to
flash the card without destroying the unit. And I like the ability to
switch out cards and antenna's. I like the ease of upgradablility as well.
If a customer is having problems because of some interference source that
wasn't there at install time, I can just install a higher powered card or
antenna with little effort.
As for snow.. well we get plenty of it... and just try to install to an area
where we can reach directly with a ladder. Otherwise we have a propane
torch with a really long hose much like one used for burning weeds alongside
a ditch.
I don't use anything linksys because of their track record... so I don't
know what the hype is about the wet11

For us, no integrated solution like the KN-50 is useful. With mostly
long range shots, we use DB-24 antenna's almost exclusively. We also
prefer to have our radio electronics where they can be serviced without
climbing on to the roof or having to tilt over the antenna mast. Winter
weather here can prevent rooftop service for days at a time. Due to the
heavy tree infestation of our area, we often have 10-20 foot masts.
Also, having had many bad experiences with PoE, we have just about
abandoned any use of it. Every time we had a lightning storm or a windy
but dry winter day we had to go out and reconfigure or replace our PoE
clients.
What we really need is a reliable supply of the Ubicomm's Karlnet
satellites or the upcoming Karlnet satellite flash for the Linksys
WET11. As we are currently converting from standard 802.11b AP's to
Karlnet, the flash for the Linksys's would allow us to preserve much of
our current hardware investment.
And, one last comment: The loss of the SC-4700 will make signal testing
harder for many of us. Without it, it will be difficult to troubleshoot
/validate antenna and cable. Keep this product available, please!!
