Bob,

They had various problems, the caps fixed most of them. I have a Macintosh as well and using it, I can reflash the firmware very easily. A lot of the time the firmware is corrupted as well. I think out of 50 or so I only had 1 or two that the caps would not fix along with the firmware update. I always update the firmware and test them as 802.11b before flashing them to KN. I have had very good service with the Airports using this method. One note of caution. If the Airports have the standard brown colored caps (there are 2 of them), then they should be replaced. If the caps are green and some other color (I don't remember what) then they have been upgraded by Apple and are usually ok. A tell tail sign of problems is if the top of the cap is BULGED out any at all, they are going bad. Again, if they are brown, they WILL go bad even if not bulged out. The problem stems from the heat rating of the standard brown caps. I use caps I purchase from Digi-Key. Part number P10273-ND 330uf 25vdc rated. I use the same cap for both input and output positions. You can order on-line from Digi-Key.

If you have some that you cannot get flashed, send them to me and I will do it for free (for a few anyway). Just have the caps installed first. Or I can change them for a small fee. I have plenty of caps in stock. email off-list: steve@vroomwireless.com or loomiss@cox.net .

Steve

So they were just "dead" and you replaced a cap and now they are good?
I've had a few that seem to lose their firmware totally.

The input capacitor rated voltage is 16 volts DC. If you stay below that,
you will be fine. The regulator itself is good for up to 40 volts. The
Apple Airport is almost the same as an RG and has a higher rated input
capacitor, I think around 25 volts DC. If you replace the input cap on
the
RG with a higher rated one, you will be limited by that. I've had to
replace caps in Airports that go bad because of the heat generated due to
the closed design of the "flying saucer" case and can speak to that if
someone has questions, also part numbers for caps.
