Appreciate W4ZV sharing his experience with the Orion AGC. I've read
Ten-Tec's excellent articles, and maybe I've missed something, but it seems
like a piece of the puzzle is missing. My understanding is that the digital
AGC applies a varying degree of compression to signals above the threshold.
The digital AGC does not amplify - a signal will emerge with the maximum gain
if the digital AGC applies no compression to it. If this understanding is
correct (and perhaps it is not), can someone please explain the following from
the Optimization document:"The threshold value in the AGC system acts like an
IF gain control for the receiver chain ? turn the value low (like to .37 uV)
and the receiver gain comes up, as do the signal levels." I would think that
lowering the threshold will introduce compression and would lower the receiver
gain. I'd appreciate any help with what I'm missing here. Perhaps the
architecture is actually more complex. Thanks & 73,Barry N1EU(no Orion yet
to play on)
