Just to follow up on this.

Between my office PC and the RS-232 devices in the radio room 
(including the Orion),  I use TWO 16' active USB repeater cables in 
series, connected to a 4-port hub (generic CompUSA whatever-was-on-
the-shelf) to the USB/RS232 converter cable.

There aren't any problems.  Suggestions about sensitivity to memory or 
CPU speed or the meaning of life as seen by your laptop make no sense.
