By description it sounds like something I heard in the winter of 2004.  You 
wouldn't believe what that was...  Before I comment, I'd like to hear what 
you hear.

Can you provide a 30 second recording?  Something small, mono, 11 KHz 
sampling, 8-bit is adequate.
