Dave (W0LEV),

Respectfully, bring it up in discussions with your elected officials... That is the ONLY way this will change.

Ed, I have trouble with ARRL doing the job FCC should be doing wrt the
solar power (and others) industry. After all, ARRL is offering this
service at no expense. I realize it's for the good of amateur radio, in
general. But our, your and my, tax money is supposed to be paying FCC to
do what ARRL (and your lab) is volunteering. It's just not right!!!

Not to mention the work of ARRL in taking FCC to court and winning against
FCC for misrepresenting the BPL data. That must have cost a bit of ARRL's
funds?

My guess is that any agency is going to defer this back to FCC. There is
one difference between RF pollution and other pollution and that is that
once the source is stopped, RF pollution is instantly gone.

FCC has regulations to control RF pollution, so trying to get another
agency to write different regulations is not going to go anywhere, IMHO.

UL is not a regulatory agency, so they do not get involved even with
ensuring that devices comply with FCC Part 15 or related rules. They
approve things based solely on electrical safety.

Jim, you have a great idea. I'm sure if the RFI from all sources,
especially solar power and SMPSs/inverters were treated as an environmental
hazard, it sure as heck would gain traction!!

True. Maybe widespread spectrum pollution, which is what it really is,
should be treated as an environmental problem and not a communications
issue alone. And yes, ARRL shouldn’t have to carry the full load. What if
Solar and HVAC had to prove no spectrum pollution to get signed off by UL
to legally sell stuff. Maybe HF is effectively being abandoned and
sacrificed in favor of the new world of devices which generate collateral
HF RFI.
Although while spinning the dial I did hear an aviation weather report
USB
around 3.3 MHz if I recall from Gander so at least a few services haven’t
gone satellite or UHF. At 35,000 feet over the North Atlantic I guess
there’s not much RFI unless generated on board!

I understand, Jim. But I have only to mention the whole Solar Power
industry. In that respect, our very own ARRL is doing the job FCC was
originally chartered to do.

I think we can all be a bit more constructive on this reflector and stay
on point to solve the problems ourselves. Get out on the Interstate and
check out the number of serious speeders. How many cops would it take to
catch them all? Are we willing to pay enough taxes for that? I don't
think
so and the FCC has never had enough resources to run down all reported
violations. The country would never consent to paying for that in any
event.

Yes, I realize the present FCC is just a collection of overpaid lawyers
who
wouldn't know RF if it bit them in the........ (you fill in the blank).
Further, OET has been gutted. Save some federal money and close down
the
FCC. There would be no major impact to the RF world. Go the way of
CB.
