Perhaps the "ignorant ranting" wouldn't occur if the those who start the
ranting would learn a little tolerance?
Apparently those who had money, talent and the know-how in 1979 thought that
beacons on 14.100mhz was a good idea. Im sure it still is for some. So
through whatever means, they got it sanctioned by the ARRL and the IARU.
They in turn use this to justify something that they (the actual beacon
users) utilize. I personally agree with a majority of the postings so far
in that I've never used the beacons, and if I want to check propagation, I
simply turn on the radio and listen. Propagation to VU4 is nice, but if no
one's on there, who cares? If I don't know if they're there or not (maybe
they're listening and not transmitting) and I want to talk to them, I'll
give them a call.
If for 4 days out of the 365 days of the year (and I'm speaking of RTTY
contests specifically, DX contests such as WW and WPX with worldwide
participation), they could just be slightly inconvenienced (right or wrong)
without starting the same, boring, meaningless, falling-on-deaf-ears,
complaints, then this entire thread wouldn't exist. As for the excuse of
"in use since 1979", this doesn't hold much water. If it did, the old farts
on 20m ssb who hold nets every single day of the year for whatever excuse
possible would have a point in their continuous, post contest rants.
The beacon users are going to be inconvenienced and the RTTY operators are
going to continue to operate on 14.100. Right or wrong, one group doesn't
care about the other's desires, but you certainly haven't seen rantings
about beacons taking up the space that could hold 2 or 3 additional qso's on
one of the few useful bands available during this part of the cycle, in an
already limited sub-band. I've been on this reflector since 2001, and it's
the same people, posting the same messages, after the same contests, every
single time. I have to agree with Joe on this, stop crying and have a
little tolerance.
If 4 days out of the year is so terrible that beacon users cant live with
it, then its time to start up the troops and begin proceedings to move into
this century where digital modes are growing by leaps and bounds. Figure
out where you could locate the beacons, so they'd be the least obtrusive to
everyone, and move them. Nothings impossible. They got it done the first
time, they can get it done again, else we'd still be riding in horse drawn
buggies because its been around since whatever year the buggy was invented.
