I purchased one of the ST-8000A units from this seller and it arrived as
advertized. Brand new in a foil sealed pouch in the original sealed carton.
Complete with all those expensive connectors and manual. Mine is serial
number 122 and I believe manufactured in 1991. When you consider these are
still listed on the HAL site for over $5,000 how can you beat $249. One of
the differences between the ST-8000 and 8000A as noted by several other is
the lack of a tuning scope. This was easily solved with a surplus Tektronix
620 X-Y monitor ($25). Using the data I/O connector J1, I simply took the
Mark audio output (pin 7) and the Space audio output (pin 9) plus the ground
and connected them to the X-Y inputs of the Tek 620. Note: the raw signals
levels from the ST-8000A will overdrive the display of the Tek 620, so you
will have to add 2 pots (1 Meg) to reduce the signal levels. After adjusting
the pots for full screen deflection you have a very nice 6 inch diagonal
tuning display that I feel is actually much better than the display on the
ST-8000.
