I replaced Norton AV with Microsoft Software Essentials, but maybe I
shouldn't have because I didn't get a warning. I closed the browser with
Task Manager.

Apparently this is real and it's possible that if you click the X box to
close the dialog box instead of hitting the Cancel button,
the virus will trigger.

Don't hit the X box to close the dialog box!

I understand it's on eHam as well.

On Friday I got a nasty virus on my work laptop while visiting a couple ham
websites. I couldn't peg down which one.

Today, on both my home PCs, when I went to contesting.com, I got a dialog
box that asks me if I want to open a program on my
computer.

From: oorqqqq.cx.cc
Program: Microsoft Help and Support Center
Address: hcp://services/search?... etc etc

Of course, I canceled the request.

I don't recall allowing this on my work PC but I may have. The virus I got
was actually a dangerous trojan called Data Restore. It
took me a couple of hours, but I was able to get rid of it using a method
described on myantispyware.com.

I have sent a message to the webmaster @ contesting.com to have them check
the website for viruses. I could be mistaken but
something doesn't seem right.

Here's a screenshot of the dialog box that pops up when visiting
contesting.com:
