Bill the IC-746 was prone to the same failure mode. Fixed mine before
it happened, high value R, rf choke and a gas gap on the input.
Probably overkill but it's the last line of defense in the radio.

Got the report from the factory on my non working IC-7600. Turns out it was ESD 
damage. Three diodes and one IC were destroyed on the tuner control board. Not 
covered 
by warranty of course, so that learning experience cost me $223.45 plus 
shipping of 
$85 each way. Ouch.

There never was any lightning, just that kind of precipitation static I've 
heard 
hundreds of times before, but will never hear again more than a fraction of a 
second.
