Chen,

I'm confused - perhaps because I can't easily visualize the set-ups:

Here are the confusing (in my mind) possibilities

SENDING STATION RECEIVING STATION

Transmitter USOS Receiver USOS Transmitter USOS Receiver USOS

      OFF OFF OFF OFF
      OFF OFF OFF ON
      OFF OFF ON OFF
      OFF OFF ON ON

      OFF ON OFF OFF
      OFF ON OFF ON
      OFF ON ON OFF
      OFF ON ON ON

      ON OFF OFF OFF
      ON OFF OFF ON
      ON OFF ON OFF
      ON OFF ON ON

      ON ON OFF OFF
      ON ON OFF ON
      ON ON ON OFF
      ON ON ON ON

Thus, I have 16 'possibilities'

Questions:
  1. Are any of these possibilities actually moot?
  2. Isn't USOS a 'RECEIVING' parameter? What does USOS on transmit do?
3. Is there any type of 'handshaking' to show the other stations use of USOS?
  4. What do you recommend as the best way to set up USOS for my station

Thanks,

de Phil - N8PS

As I remember, USOS is enabled on the receiver's end and adds the extra LTRS on space. I don't believe that the transmitting station sends a LTRS character along with each SPACE character that it detects.

That is correct. From the transmitter's viewpoint, each SPACE is simply an "implicit LTRS."

The transmitter's only responsibility when using USOS, is to change its own state to LTRS right after sending the SPACE.

If a FIGS character comes after a space, the transmitter will then automatically insert an additional FIGS code first.
