Perhaps ARRL needs to beef up the OO program and start issuing "cards"
again for bad operating.
Amen!
It was at least 20 years ago, maybe more, but at the July meeting of our
friendly neighborhood radio club, one of the patriarchs gets up and shows us
a salmon colored post card he had recently received in the mail. He
explained that his callsign was heard on 40 meters SSB less than 3KHz away
from the lower band edge... ON FIELD DAY! Now what kind of jerk gives our
notices for poor operating practice on Field Day? Apparently an OO who
really took his job seriously! The good news was that he gave him a 59
signal report!
Fast forward to the present day...
Here is a quote from a thread on a popular amateur radio forum in the
Contesting section, " Our club has a 'GOTA' Get on the Air setup where we
actually work the WARC bands during field day to introduce newbies and
potentials to ham radio." Of course I had no other choice but to give him a
well-deserved tongue lashing (to which he has yet to respond!). Obviously
there isn't much of an OO program, if any, left these days. So sad.
