Peter:

I would say that it depends upon the individual preference of the
operator.  I run an Omni V on CW with 500 / 1.8Nar.  The frequency
response of that combination is what my old ears prefer.  In unusual /
contest conditions, I switch to 250 / 1.8Nar.  That really narrows it
down, in combination with the PBT / Fade / BP controls.  In extreme
cases, I kick in the NIR-12.
