While on the subject of Heil, take a listen to the new Heil Gold Line
cartridge that just came out. I heard a friend of mine with one on his Omni
6 it sounded incredibly good. Much smoother and broader response than the 5
cart. If you buy a Gold Line, you get a choice for your second cart. of
either the 5 or 4. Just another alternative!

I use a Heil HC-5 boom mike headset with my Omni VI plus. I am quite
satisfied with it in so far as listening goes. Heil makes adapters for
their headset/boom mike to fit many radios, the Ten-Tec among them. I
talked with the Heil sales rep at Dayton about their adapter for the
Ten-Tec. She said it is four-pin, and fits most modern Ten-Tecs.
My Omni VI has a four pin mic connector, with the one on the Omni itself
being a four-pin male. The HC-5 has two connectors. One, for the
earphones, is a quarter inch male stereo plug that will fit directly into
the "phones" female port on the front of the Omni VI. Thus, the Heil HC-5
can be used as earphones without modification.
The other plug, for the boom mike, is a one eighth inch mono plug (not RCA
type). Both the earphone plug and the boom mike plug are together at the
end of a seven foot long wire emanating from the headset.
The adapter I got from Heil is a set of wires about 7 inches long.. The
"split" end has female ports to receive both the one quarter and one eighth
inch plugs. The two wires then merge, are covered with heat shrink, and
terminate in a four-pin male mike connector. This won't fit the Omni VI,
which is also male. Instead, it is intended to go into a foot switch
device. This I don't have. I guess that the foot switch then has wires
coming out of it that would in turn go into the phones and mic plugs on the
Omni. Thus, unless one buys or makes a foot switch device, the adapter is
of no direct use. I suspect that one could buy the appropriate foot switch
from Heil, as well.
It is easier to forgo the adapter and just make a switch box with the
appropriate ports in it to receive the HC-5 earphone and mike plugs. Then
run wires to the Omni. I made such a device for my Delta 580, but with a
hand activated push to talk switch on the box, and an on/off switch to use
vox. I've yet to make the same for the Omni.
As I write this I am listening to an EV1 station run dx on 15 meters. My
S-Meter needle is not moving at all. Yet, he is almost full copy on the
Heil earphones. I enjoy using them as they seem to "hear good." The
earmuffs do get a bit hot here in the KY summers, but my radio room A/C does
not pull S-9 all the time! When I used the boom mike with the Delta 580 I
got good reports, and it sure was nice to just be able to run vox and talk
as I swung around the operating table from computer to radio, etc. I need
to make an adapter for the Omni VI soon.
I don't think you can go wrong with the Heil.

Its a 1/8th plug that needs to connect to my Omni-V. I know I need a four
pin connector. Does anyone know the pin layout for the Omni, and is it hard
to solder those pins.
