Jim, your horizontal loop is too high at 50'!!!!  We also
have been using one for years on FD and I have one here at
home at 20-30ft in the air.  I have real problems making
stateside Q's on 80m with the DX antenna, unless they're on
the coast(s), but the horizontal loop works wonders on low
frequencies when low to ground .. beautiful skywave
antenna.  It also presents much much much less QSB than a
comparable dipole at the same height.

Mine is "about" a wavelength long on 80m .. I've never
measured it actually ... neither do we measure it on FD ..
just run till we run out of trees, hook up the twinlead and
have at it.

Working 99.99% DX with all antennas aimed at that function
at this station, the loop has even faired well for stateside
contacts during contests as high as 20m, even though the
main 20m antenna is a 4el monoband yagi at 27m.
