thanks frank for responding, especially since my last post doesn't conform
to the standard. :o)
by way of intro., i've had my lic. for approx. 4 years (doesn't seem that
long!!). as mentioned by frank, i signed my post w/the letter *j*. this is
due to *j* being short for *jay* (alright, so i'm extremely lazy :o) !!).
when i requested entrance into this fine group (at the recommendation of
some of the members at the egroup's pegasus list) jim lowman (the list
admin) warned me of the name/callsign preference of the group. let me
assure you, that i am not trying to be obnoxious nor am i untrusting of
anyone on this list by not giving out my full name &/or callsign. my
problem has to do w/sending personal info. over the internet. again, it's
nothing against anyone on this list.
i have had a couple of friends remind me that my personal info. is already
on the internet whether i put it there or not. i realize that. however, i
feel that the less amount of times i send it thru. the internet, the better
my chances are of not having my id stolen (an expensive thing to fix and a
problem that is growing). again, i realize that none of you on the list
would do such a thing, it's simply preventative against hackers.
i have used the owning a car illustration to kind of convey my position.
that is, i realize that cars are stolen on a daily basis. that does not
mean that i will never own a vehicle. it does *not* mean that if i don't
own it, they can't steal it. it *does* mean that i will do whatever i can
to make it as difficult as possible for s.one to steal the car(s) that i
own. so also w/my personal info.
for those of you who might be wondering, i of course realize that my
name/callsign go over the air w/every qso. however, a qso still seems less
threatening than a permanent email trail even though non-hams listen in.
which reminds me, i look forward to an on-air qso w/any of you once i decide
which ten-tec to buy (narrowed it down to either the jupiter or pegasus,
still would like at least 6m thrown in though).
anyway, i realize my position is extremist for some (maybe even for most) of
you. i ask that you at least give me a chance on this list. i respect and
have learned a lot from those who have posted and hope to be able to learn
more as time goes on.
for those of you who are interested, i have enclosed the emails that jim
lowman and i had when i requested entrance into the group (see below).
maybe those messages will answer any questions that my message above did
not. if, after reading this, you still have questions, let me know off-list
and i will do my best to clarify what i can.

thanks so much for the quick reply. as much as i am into computers, i don't
like to give out personal info. over the internet. i guess being into
computers i have seen (and still do see) too many security breaches. so,
even though i do have a call sign, i don't like to give it out over the
internet.
your site was recommended to me by s.one on egroups at the ten tec pegasus
group. i am looking at getting my 1st hf rig and want to learn more about
the pegasus as well as other ten tec equip. judging by the name of your
group (tentec-approval@contesting.com) as well, as the recommendation of
your group by those at the egroup's site dedicated to ten-tec's peg, i am
very interested in joining to learn more.
as i stated above, although i have a call sign, i don't like to give it out
over the internet. feel free to send me a list of rules/guidelines for
participation at your site. if they are family oriented, then i would have
no problems w/the rules. i would appreciate it if you consider letting me
participate on a trial basis (as a result of not giving out my call sign)
and if you feel any of my messages violate your rules i would have no
problem w/you dropping me from participation.
if you really need my call sign, and you promise not to make it available
over the internet, send me your address and i could mail it to you. i am
aware that my call sign is available thru the internet thru various call
sign databases. however, i feel that the fewer times it gets tossed around,
the better off i'll be.
am i paranoid? probably! don't get me wrong, i don't have a problem w/you
or any other ham knowing my call sign. it's when it goes over the internet,
then it becomes open for anyone to see. that, along w/other info. can lead
to stolen identities which is becoming more commonplace as a result of the
internet. hope you understand.

can search the archives for messages sent by me. just be aware that i found
that another "j" participates on at least one of the ham groups (don't
remember which one since he seems to participate even less than i). the
