I believe the hiss is normal - unfortunately.  It's most likely being
generated in the LM383 audio PA.  Fixing the problem is on my "to do"
list, as well as looking into shortening the hang time of the AGC.

The reason you hear it so prominently in the headphones is probably due
to their high-end response.
