Well I think that there is a real
need for some type of standardized

rating system in the new age of reflectors,
Ebay and Eham.

You can't "look" at items except
in fuzzy digital picture that

can hide
many imperfections. A possible reason for the

evolution of the CCA rating system is
to prevent one man's

hacked up "5" being an other man's solid
"9". If you are

dealing with a high dollar ($1000 - $4000 or
more)

item across the country via the internet,
you bet I

want a standardized unit of
comparison. With used

TenTec gear being more reasonably priced the need

may not have been as great. Still I
would hate

to buy a Paragon II on a E place rated a
"9" and find that it

had been nicotine yellowed, dropped,
water damaged

and rusty but still a solid "9"and ended up
paying $450

for something I wouldn't have given
$50.00 for!

There was a time that you could have trusted a ham

in his descriptions with out a seconds thought

to the contrary, but no more. Sadly I have had

dealings with crooks over the last two years

that would look you square in the eye and lie

like a dog! ( With
apologies to all K9's out
there! )

An example. I purchased a FT-747 at a
local fest

two years ago an was assured that it
worked 100%.

Well if you consider a deaf receiver and a
transmitter

that works for 6 seconds before the power
output drops

from 100 watts to 1 watt working 100% and
that was in a

face to face transaction!
The most recent rip off was

two weeks ago when I purchased a Icom
IC-V21AT.

I tried it out for a few min. and it
looked OK.

Later that day I found that the CPU had a
problem

if the radio was in use for a short
while the CPU

would go nuts! Resets would not work
either.

I am on the lookout for these "HAMS".
What will I do?

I do not know. But one thing is for
sure, every one at the

hamfest will know what they did and what
they are!!! I wonder

what the statute of limitations is on
hamfest gear in Ohio?!

Not for me, Randy. Thanks, anyway. I'm too "independent" to fit. Just have

some fun poking at each other and enjoying the view.

RST is the only standard I wish we could all follow, using not our
S-meters,

but the real standard as written out.

Ah, me. The tribulations of living so long I recall when there were no

S-meters. And when you bought something, you just looked at it and decided

what you would pay.
