Hi Tim,
Most cw operators will "adjust" a bug to their own preferences, and here is
an article on how to do the basic set up :

Experienced cw ops will also advise to get your speed up 10-15 wpm of "good"
(well sent, correct spacing, timing, etc.) with a straight ( non semi auto)
key before you try to master a bug. Have fun.
