"Are you using a Heil microphone element or some other mike with lower
output?"
----------
I am using the Heil Studio One mike made for Ten-Tec with my Orion. With
recommended setting of 45 for the MIC level (per the manual), there is
adequate output from the mike, so that's not the problem.

The ALC lamp flickers a lot and the RF output is not stingy

"There is a microphone gain compensation pot located on the bottom panel
just behind the "MIC/PH/CW" jacks. It is accessible through a hole in
the panel. You might find that increasing the gain setting cures both
the stingy output and monitor level problems."

9 out of 10 respondees mentioned the same problem of slightly weak
monitor audio output on their Orions, so it's probably inherent with the
rig. Turning the receiver audio gain up makes the monitor audio louder,
but then the station you're working is a bit too loud in the headset.

But, out of curiosity, just what does the mike gain compensation pot you
mentioned do? Does it increase only monitor audio, or does it increase
mike gain (where, if increased, the MIC gain level would have to be set
to a lower level than usual)?
