If there has to be vertical wire, it would be much wiser
NOT to ground it.  RF power forced into soil produces no signal.

So called "half-slopper" antenna is a dipole (as most antennas are)
deformed somewhat and with one leg end grounded. This was not born
out of search for quality or efficiency, it was merely a practical patch.
