You can run one dipole leg vertical, and other horizontal,
or zig-zag, or in any other fashion. Resonant frequency
will change slightly, but that's easy to correct. Look at
"Low-Band DXing from a Small Lot" chapter from ON4UN's book.
As explained in the previous post, most of antennas are
distorted dipoles.
