Yes, this is a firmware problem, not a problem with the serial
interface -- although you might say there should be a mute on/off
serial command.  You can get the same effect in software by setting
the AF gain, of course, but in my opinion (FWIW) every front panel
control ought to have a parallel in the serial command set and vice
versa.
