Perhaps a desk microphone with an encoder for frequency, volume, mic gain? 
That would take more connections, wouldn't it?

I can fully follow the logic of announcing the Orion II as
was done and the reasons for the enhancements and changes
made to the original Orion to get there. That is except for
the 8 pin mic connector. I don't see where it adds anything
of real value to the new radio. It's not like the 8 pin mics
from the other manufactures had standardized pin
configurations in any way anyhow. And it's not hard to find 4
pin mic connectors either. So what does it really provide?
