I know that Kenwood and others use ALC foldback and thermal protection to
protect finals but Ten Tec depends on the Airpax type breaker and the Ten
Tec
power supplies. The Ten Tec supplys stay very close to the amp draw of
the
rigs they are made to work with.
20 Amp for OMNI V
18 Amp for Corsair II
If you run the Corsair II with a bad SWR it will draw well over the 18 Amp
limit and the OMNI V will go well over the 20 Amp limit.
The right Ten Tec supply has the breaker that will trip at the 18 or 20
amp
limits.
If you are not running a Ten Tec supply it is very important to have the
right Airpax breaker.
As an example a 18 amp Airpax on a Corsair will trip at about 20 Amp due
to
overshoot.
You can say so long to the finals on the Corsair II if you have a reactive
load even if the power supply stays stable because it puts out over 20
Amps.
Same with the OMNI.
But with the OMNI the breakpoint would be 20 Amps.
However, with a reactive load all bets are off as to what is safe after
you
pass the breakpoint.
Make sure your Airpax is fast or instant.
Wards does not stock the fast or instant.
They will order it for you from Airpax if you tell them you are a HAM.
If you get the Airpax they stock it will be the slow and it is no good
for
Ten Tec use.
Your finals will fry long before it shuts down.
