Tom, not only will the battery leak, but in my case 2 alkaline batteries (both 9v and new) exploded and made one bad mess. Fortunately I was able to scrape and scrub the mess out. This happened on both my Paragons. Do not put an alkaline battery in, use ni-cads, available at Radio Shack for $10.
