I'm out of the U.S. so I am not sure, but I thought that in the last
year the FCC dropped the rules about HF amps that killed the 5 watt in
amplifiers like the TenTec 405.
I've seen discussions on NetNews/Usenet that they are available again.
Another common practice back when I did live in the U.S. was to go
to a truck stop, buy a CB amp and clean it up. According to the articles
I read, some were quite good and made fine additions to any ham shack.
While that may not have been 100% legal then, if the ban has indeed been
dropped it would be now.
