An excellent point and as an Electrical Engineer who designs lightning
protection systems music to my ears.
Network remote operation means different things for different folks so
let me clarify my goals.
My networking desires are only to communicate with my (future) Omni VII
inside my home network. Communicating with the radio from the outside
might be something interesting to do, but is not a requirement and would
never be just "put the Omni on the Internet and hope it is secure
enough." This requires secure tunneling or a VPN system to do correctly
as one should never expect a peripheral like a printer or this radio to
provide the adequate level of security easily attained from purpose
built secure network equipment.
I know I know you are probably thinking "John, if you want to use your
radio and you are at home why don't you just go sit in front of it?" A
completely valid point and I do intend to do this often with one hand on
the knobs and the other on the PTT or Key. In addition, however, I am
really interested in using my radio/antenna assets from my laptop
anywhere in my house and, perhaps, while relaxing on the deck; I have
many personal reasons for pursuing this.
If the Omni VII is what I think it is, TenTec has provided a way to have
my cake and eat it to.
Because I do not intend to operate from outside my home network, I would
still manually power up and down the radio station, connect/disconnect
antennas, etc. just like I always do. While I still intend to install
some great lightning and surge protection equipment, my station will
still benefit from the good ol' Arm-strong manual disconnect "feature."

I know repeaters do so do they just EAT the damage or is there some
protection or maybe a telephone total disconnect command ? I can't be the

For what it is worth... I am usually concerned about the cost of things.
If I have to pay $300.00 for a tuner I am going to get one good for 3KW.

Seems to me that if your are going to add an external tuner then you
will have to have a way to tune it remotely. With the built in tuner
the access will be through the One Plug GUI or if your antennas are well
matched you won't need a tuner anyway. Yes the remote operation does
work I have been running my rig from my laptop, although only from
within my own house, I think they would frown on me working DX from
