Headphones are a very personal purchase. Like Boxers vs Briefs... or
arguing about which word processor is better... every one has a
favorite. And it can get pretty heated as guys argue about the pros
and cons of different models.
For example, I agree the HD-280 are excellent sounding cans... I sold
mine, however, as they were kinda heavy and a had a rather snug fit
compared to some others have. Yet, they are super well made,
extremely durable, and have really great sound. If you like a snug
fit, they are excellent cans. (They may not be snug on YOU...) As
the man said, at $75 they are at a great price, universally sold for $99
typically.
And all this talk about old high impedance headphones... IN MY VIEW ...
they do not sound as good as the newer cans which have great linearity
and are way more comfortable. A set of AKG K-240 phones are super
light you can wear them all weekend during a contest. A set of
Sennheiser cans costing under $50 and sold to the MP3 player market can
be super hot and plenty loud on very little input. Sennheiser makes
some really good low cost phones for the portable music player market
that sound good, and are plenty comfortable, and easy on the budget.
If you REALLY WANT COMFORT AND QUALITY... GET THE NEW RS-170 DIGITAL
SIGNAL WIRELESS CANS ! My wife and I use them to listen to old time
radio
shows - and they let us roam all over the house. You don't need to
worry about how loud they are relative to the rig output, because they
have their own volume controls right on the earphone receivers.
Excellent sound. You can use the less expensive RS-120 or RS-130
RS-140 line RF-SIGNAL wireless headphones and they are also excellent
- with the same volume adjustment right on the earphone receiver. You
can roam all over the house with these babies, and stay in touch with
the rig. Great for when you need a PIT STOP and want to monitor your
place in the net rotation ... Fewer more missed calls that way... And
you can keep up on the conversation while roaming all over the place.
I have six sets of these Sennheiser wireless phones - various models
from the RS-110 to the RS-170... THE XYL LOVES THEM TOO, as she can
walk all over the house and hear the program - great for when she has
to stop out and do the laundry a moment... or stir a pot on the
stove... or...
whatever. Also good for keeping a program or one's ham friends quiet,
and the other party can remain in the room without being bothered.
THAT is MY recommendation for the best cans to use with your rig !
