Ah Steve, I see you already were thinking along the lines I suggested in 
my other email.  You might make a note in the manual about the change of 
part type, so that anyone getting the radio after you knows what is 
"revised".
Sometimes on older equipment, it just does not pay to try to match 
everything to the original.  Many circuits are very forgiving and will 
work with whatever part is at hand.
