Works fine. Use a 10 dB attenuator like this to keep the mic from being too hot into the circuit. Your AGC will work better if your mic setting is set at about 35-55 - but without the attenuator, it sometimes needs to be set as low as 2-3% and that crowds the AGC so that it is always on or always off, and has little room for flexing. You want the AGC to come on occasionally on voice peaks, but if your mic is so hot you gotta set the mic input volume down as low as 2 or 3 percent, it has little room to flex and may always be on or come on too often.

It has been awhile since I looked at Jim Brown's article on audio interfacing, and cannot recall if he works in an attenuator pad or not, but it is worth considering.
