I built a simple interface, with a 10db divider (pad), didn't work. Did some
more searching, turns out the CM-500 is an electret (despite many sites
listing it as dynamic). Ah-ha! Wired bias to the ring, now I have a tiny
(and tinny) output with a lot of hiss. Should I try biasing to the tip and
or should I try a dropping resistor?
Thanks,

That's also true with the FT-1000MP. I made up an adapter for a DX
trip, and tested it before leaving. I WAS able to turn the mic gain down
low enough to avoid distortion. Dunno about the Orion, but I'd guess
the answer is the same.
