I have mostly older gear, too. Nothing from this century....I run a section-wide
cw net and it amused me when the guys would come on and tell me how
many cycles I was off the net freq. when I was NCS. I told them they were to zero with the
NCS no matter how accurate their Jap Black Boxes were. (true).

Now with the squeeze on 80 meters, it's almost every night we have to
move a little with all the CQ'ers and also the W1AW/xx stations who seem
to like to straddle our net freq. operating split, just before or after net time.

Now on SSB RX I have another problem. I can't hear SSB very well and it's the devil for me to get on someone's freq. I need a lot of help. Also hear a low pitch best on CW.
I'm certain I'm pretty much tone deaf.

I remember once I was logging CW for a friend on fd. I would be putting
a low-pitched station into the computer, and he would work someone else,
at or just above my high audio limit. This was even with a sharp filter.
That duo didn't last long!

(Yeah, I remember scanning the whole novice band for a CQ answer back
in 1958!)

I certainly got everyone riled up with this one, didn't I?

Just to be clear, these guys were not giving me grief but I still don't like
being the guy who is off frequency all the time even though I often run old,
old gear. The Corsair (I) is not a candidate as a National Bureau of Standards
reference.

I can't help but view this thread with a bit of humor, and dare I say,
irony.

Got my Novice ticket in 1959 and remember that with the first 3 or 4
receivers I had, I was lucky to be within 50 kHz. Even when I got the
Drake 4B line (wonderful radios!) in 1969, they were calibrated to 1 kHz.

So pardon me for smiling when I see people quibbling about 30 cycles.

My, how times change! :-)
