gary i was a kid when i first heard am. i used to set and listen to our local
cival defense checkins. there was one guy who was a science teacher and he
knew how to homebrew an amp. remember there was no vox or push to talk in
those days. you heard net control give his call you would hear a big swich
being turned on, then another and then something else and then you heard this
huge signal with his call.

he would give his call and then you would hear everything else. it was a
cumbersone setup but oh that audio. i still hear it!

A TenTec 705 microphone into the
OMNI-VII with the TX ROLL OFF set to 150 Hz
and TX BW set to 3400 and TX EQ 0 dB driving a Titan to 300
 W (on peaks) is
said, on the local 160 AM net, to sound just exactly like I
 do face to face.
The transmitted pattern as seen on a FLEX-1500 in panadapter
 mode shows
about a 18 dB roll off between 300 Hz and 3300 Hz not at all
 unlike the
pattern of a commercial AM station.

I'm told that I sound acceptable for a non-boatachor using
 the Omni VII.   I
believe the audio is adjustable on the O7 using the AM mode,
 but I haven't
tried real hard to improve my audio any.  Since we're
 on the topic, I'll
give the Eagle credit where credit is due.  I'm always
 complimented on how
well I sound using the Eagle.  I use the same mic for
 both rigs (TT 709).
I check into an AM net on Friday evenings and us an AL-80a
 for extra kick,
and some of the fellas are hard pressed to believe I'm using
 a modern rig.
:-)  The others usually talk about it later when the
 frequency switches back
over to SSB.  You hear them talking about how well the
 Eagle sounds and you
can tell they're mulling over looking into getting one.
