I used CHIRP. And that's the one I recommend.
My research on the web brought an avalanche of data, but mostly useless.
I guess I just didn't happen to find the right web site.
But I did pick up the clue that 99.9% of the problems are caused by the
cable, which led me to purchase an original branded cable. THAT solved my
problem.
"Which drivers to use" is of no help if you don't have a good cable.
I read several tips on the driver, tried them all and could not get either
of my two cables to work. The problem is, the clones do not have an
original Prolific chip (USB-to-serial bridge). They just don't work with
the Prolific driver.
The original cable worked right out of the blocks.

For the UV-5R someone maintains a web site with exact instructions on
which software to use, which drivers to use and an English version of
the manual written with the help the people of the Yahoo group.
10 minutes of research would have given you all you needed to know.

There is a program called CHIRP which does exactly that. It allows you
to program radios and save the data in a form it can be loaded into a
completely different radio. The program is open source and supported by
donations, including radios.
