Sil-Glyde is great for these encoders, as well as PTO lube. It does not dry
out, and is about the right consistency. A little goes a long way. My
experience over 20 years (on PTO's).
Also, TenTec says they are CLOSED, according to their web site.

There is a lubricant in the encoders, a silicone based material whose intent
is to both lubricate the contacting surfaces to prevent wear and to coat the
parts with a movable material to prevent oxidation.

Cleaning will remove this material. The encoders will work for a while but the
lubricant was put. There for good reasons.
